Range Tipping Hazard

While it is not considered a "Code Violation," if the range is not secured to prevent tipping in a home inspected by Integrity Real Estate Inspections, it will be identified as a "Safety Hazard" and will be listed on the Summary page for correction.

Without properly installed anti-tip hardware provided by the manufacturer, a free-standing or slide-in kitchen range can tip forward if the oven door is used as a step stool or makeshift seat.  This is a particular hazard in a home with small children who may use climb on the oven door to see what is for dinner.

Since 1991 all new ranges have been provided with anti-tip brackets to prevent this dangerous situation.  Unfortunately most are never installed and remain in the plastic bag with the operating instructions.   The attached Range Tipping Handout provides more information from that the Association of Home Appliances Manufacturers (AHAM) has compiled.
